Burnham gives cautious welcome to new Welsh Language Measure proposals
9.05.00am GMT Thu 4th Mar 2010
Eleanor Burnham, Assembly Member for North Wales has given a cautious welcome to the proposed Welsh Language Measure.
Commenting, Eleanor, Welsh Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Culture, said, "The document itself is too long, too cumbersome and something of a damp squib.
"I am concerned that the Measure dwells heavily on responsibilities rather than rights and I would have liked to see the human rights issue more fully addressed.
"The potential loss of the Welsh Language Board is extremely worrying as their expertise has been a great benefit and I hope that the new Welsh language Commissioner will put his full weight behind the promotion of our language.
"Given the protracted and difficult incubation period this document has endured I now look forward to debating this Measure and the timely delivery of improved Welsh language services in Wales".
