Eleanor Burnham, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for North Wales, is to travel on Virgin's very first biofuel train service in North Wales, flagging it off from Llandudno as it heads back to its final destination in London.

The Virgin service to Llandudno uses the UK's very first biodiesel-powered train and has been welcomed by Ms Burnham as an exciting new development for Welsh rail travel.

Ms Burnham said: "I am delighted to be one of the first to travel on this new biodiesel train service in North Wales.

"Biofuels offer a way of making huge reductions in CO2 emissions and could also be a unique opportunity for Welsh farming, where we can grow the crops that make up these new fuels. On top of this, biofuels also offer us a way to reuse vast amounts of the waste oils so often used in the food industry across Wales and the UK.

"The conversion of Virgin's Voyager fleet to biofuel could cut carbon dioxide emissions by 12%. Virgin has taken the first step in the field in line with the recommendations of the UK Department for Transport.

"It is my hope that this use of biodiesel fuel on a North Wales service will encourage and inspire the Welsh Assembly Government and other rail operators in Wales to actively explore how they can do their bit to make their trains more environmentally friendly."
