Burnham Lobbies for Wrexham-London Rail Link

3.06.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 3rd Oct 2006

Eleanor Burnham has today written to Transport Minister Andrew Davies asking him to support a bid by Wrexham County Borough Council for funding a direct rail service from Wrexham Central to London Marylebone in an official written letter.

Ms Burnham, Welsh Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for North Wales and a prominent member of the recent Interim Rail Committee, praised the proposals for a high-speed service between Wrexham and the British capital and is asking the Welsh Assembly Government to support the plan.

"This high-speed service would be a fantastic opportunity for Wrexham. We need to continue the economic revitalisation of the area and this rail link would provide direct daily contact with a major centre for business.

"I understand that the Welsh Assembly Government has stated that they have no more funding to offer Wrexham, but I hope the minister will look for alternative ways to support this scheme..

"It's would be thrilling to see the realisation of such an exciting project and I'm determined to continue to lobby all concerned to ensure this project succeeds."
