Welsh Liberal Democrats were celebrating this morning as they emerged as the clear winners of the General Election in Wales. Party leader Lembit Opik hailed the stunning victories in Ceredigion and Cardiff Central, increased majorities in Montgomeryshire and Brecon and Radnorshire, and strong second places in seats throughout Wales.

Lembit Opik said:

"This is a fantastic night for the Welsh Liberal Democrats. We started the night with two MPs, and we finish it with four - a 100% increase. We are the second party of Wales in Westminster.

"Jenny Willott managed to build a very healthy majority, and Mark Williams has pulled off the result of the night in Ceredigion. I've been telling anyone who will listen that Ceredigion was coming home for two weeks. I am delighted for Mark Williams, and look forward to working with him, Roger and Jenny in Parliament."

In Montgomeryshire, Lembit took his share of the vote to 51.2%. He said:

"This is the biggest majority in Montgomeryshire for 43 years, and I am proud and privileged to be able to serve the people here for 5 more years."

Jenny Willott romped home in Cardiff Central with a majority of over 5,000. Roger Williams increased his majority to almost 4,000. Mark Williams overcame a recount to win by 219.
