Eleanor Burnham, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for North Wales has today given her backing to the Feel the Heat awards 2010, a scheme which provides community resources to help combat fuel poverty in Wales
The award has been launched by National Energy Action Cymru (NEA) the leading fuel poverty charity and in recent years has been successful in supporting grassroots action to tackle fuel poverty.
Commenting on fuel poverty in Wales, Eleanor Burnham said
"1 in 4 households are living in fuel poverty in Wales and this is unacceptable. The current financial climate and rising energy prices add to the difficulties Welsh households face and leave many people having to choose between eating or heating. This small award scheme will make a big difference to local organisations and will provide communities with much needed resources to take action and reduce the impact of fuel poverty"
Feel the Heat is the only award scheme in Wales with the sole purpose of providing community groups with needed resources to help tackle fuel poverty. One successful organisation/ partnership will receive an award of £4000 and two runners-up will receive awards of £2000 and £1000 to help deliver or develop their local initiative this winter. The award will support activities that:
Tailor financial advice for people at risk of fuel poverty
Help households who experience poor health
Monitor the impact energy efficiency advice has on low income households
