Burnham calls for greater clarity in future broadband provision

March 23, 2010 4:02 PM

Eleanor Burnham, Assembly Member for North Wales has called on the First Minister to clarify the pledges that have been made on future broadband provision in Wales.

European funding could be available but details of eligibility are yet to be revealed; the Prime Minister has also pledged to provide "super-fast broadband" to households, but his plans have been said to involve the potential loss of thousands of jobs in the public sector.

Commenting, Eleanor, Welsh Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Culture, Communities and Equality, said, "Improvements and expansion of broadband are long overdue, but at a presentation from BT last week I was informed of the enormous challenges we face to deliver even small changes in broadband provision.

"Providing meaningful improvements in broadband - especially for the difficult areas and so-called "not spots" in rural areas of Wales - will not be easy.

"The First Minister has said he supports the proposals but I have a number of concerns with the ability of this government to deliver a fully inclusive and effective system of improvements within reasonable timescales.

"It will be interesting to see the eventual delivery plans and eligibility criteria for any improvements."
