Eleanor Burnham, Assembly Member for North Wales has called on the Welsh Assembly Government to make clear its capacity to table the new Welsh language law in time for a re-scheduled Statement by the Heritage Minister next week.
The document was intended to be laid on St. David's Day and a Statement was due to be made in the Siambr by the Heritage Minister today. In the end the document failed to get through the legislative process in Cardiff in time for today's meeting. Discussion on the Measure in the Senedd has now been postponed until 9th March.
Commenting, Eleanor, Welsh Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Culture, said, "We have waited almost three years for this Measure and it is extremely disappointing that we are facing these delays when we are so close to the finish.
"I have asked the Business Minister to explain what went wrong and whether she can guarantee the Measure will be laid in time for next week.
"I have also called on the First Minister to take a more active role in promoting and encouraging the learning of Welsh among children and adults so that we can take full advantage of this excellent cultural opportunity."
