Today, Eleanor Burnham AM, Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for North Wales, described the Welsh labour market as "desperate", as she commented on new research showing that Welsh job seekers now outnumber the number of jobs available in Wales by over seven to one - more than four times higher than this time last year.
The research, collated from the latest figures available in answers to Parliamentary Questions, reveals that:
The number of jobs available in Wales has halved over the last year while the number claiming Jobseeker's Allowance has more than doubled. The ratio of Welsh job seekers to job vacancies has risen from 1.8 in February 2008 to 7.6 in March 2009 - considerably worse than the UK average of 6.7.
Wales has the worst figures in the UK for full-time jobs with less than 7,000 full time job vacancies against nearly 80,000 jobseekers - more than 11 job seekers per full time job vacancy.
Commenting, Eleanor said:
"The situation is looking increasingly desperate: unemployment rates are soaring whilst job vacancies dry up.
"Unless job availability picks up soon, we are looking at a generation of working aged people in danger of being scarred for life by the effects of long term unemployment.
