Burnham challenges Labour-Plaid Government to provide a family nurse for every secondary school in Wales

July 2, 2009 11:20 PM

Eleanor Burnham, Welsh Liberal Democrat Spokesperson on Children and Young People questioned the Welsh Health Minister, Edwina Hart on proposals to increase school nurse provision in Wales

Eleanor said "There is considerable evidence to support an expanded service for our secondary school pupils and its obvious that many vulnerable youngsters would benefit from the invaluable support provided by having a family nurse based in the school at all times.

"A nurse in each school would allow teachers spend more time in the classroom whilst there would be a professional person on site, suitably qualified to care for any pupil or liaise with parents or other medical specialists outside of the school".

"The Government has set a target of a minimum of one family nurse per secondary school by the end of the Assembly term and I have urged the Minister to provide me with an update on the outcome of their consultation on nurse provision and to inform the Assembly, without delay when we can expect to see their strategy for implementation in Wales.
