Plurality of Broadcasting must be protected

June 10, 2009 6:00 PM

Eleanor Burnham, Assembly Member for North Wales has welcomed the publication of the Inquiry Report into Public Service Broadcasting in Wales.

Eleanor, Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Minister for Culture and a member of the Communities and Culture Committee which produced the report, said: "Whilst broadcasting is not a devolved matter, the Committee is still able to hold public service providers to account on behalf of Welsh citizens.

"It is essential that the Assembly uses its influence to ensure that broadcasting in and for Wales is delivered by a plurality of broadcasting organizations.

"The complexities of our broadcasting system are appreciated by the Committee, but for me the major concern is about ensuring value for money and making sure that Welsh programming is high on the agenda.

"Additionally, I would like to see S4C make the most of their unique position by taking this opportunity to enhance their Welsh output, perhaps even by providing dedicated channels for children and young people.
