Eleanor Burnham, Assembly Member for North Wales has expressed her support for a petition that aims to persuade radio stations in Wales to commit 10% of their airplay time to local bands.
Eleanor, Welsh Lib Dem Shadow Minister for Culture said, " The petition aims to get 1 in 10 songs played on the radio to be a track by a local performer who has never had a top twenty album before. The belief is that this will benefit local music by getting bands more fans and greater followings, and by creating distinctive and diverse regional music scenes. This will lead to a better participation at local gigs, helping local pubs and other venues.
"I have a keen interest in this petition because I would like to hear the local radio playing more local music.
"There are loads of great local bands out there but unfortunately most of them fail to get the airplay they deserve.
"Wales has a proud musical history, and I think it is a shame that when I switch on local radio I rarely hear any local songs. It would be great to hear local bands on the local stations.
"By supporting local bands we are creating interest and vibrancy in the community while also stimulating businesses where gigs are played, such as local pubs, which are going through a hard time with this current financial crisis.
"If you find the proposals of promoting local music of interest and wish to show your support for local music, please go to www.ipetitions.com/helpinglivemusic/index.html and sign the petition."
