Eleanor Burnham, Assembly Member for North Wales has challenged Heritage Minister Alun Ffred Jones to produce up-to-date figures on the use of Welsh. Speaking in the Plenary session, Eleanor asked the Minister when the next Survey could be expected.
Eleanor, Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Minister for Culture said, "The Welsh Language Board carried out three surveys on the use of Welsh between 2004 and 2006. We know that the latest figures show that around 20% of the population can speak Welsh, and we need to continue to strategically monitor the use of the Welsh language. I asked the Minister when this important document would be updated for us to assess the development of the use of Welsh in our communities.
"I am a little concerned that the Minister seemed vague about the surveys and felt he needed to give me a written answer rather than reply there and then. With the Welsh Language LCO now progressing through Westminster this is an ideal opportunity to evaluate, strengthen and increase Welsh language use."
