Eleanor Burnham, Assembly Member for North Wales and a former magistrate, has condemned the lack of Welsh language provision in the new ICT system being used in Welsh magistrates' courts as "criminal". The 'LIBRA' system has left courts unable to provide a bilingual service and until the end of this year summonses will only be printed in English.
Eleanor, Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Minister for Culture said, "Magistrates' courts deal with 95% of criminal court cases and the Government has spent millions on the latest developments. As a former magistrate I find this situation completely ridiculous and I challenged the Minister on this in the Siambr.
"Both the UK and Welsh Assembly Governments have know about this new system for five years, yet they did nothing to secure a bilingual IT service for the Welsh courts.
" Once again the Labour-Plaid Assembly Government has failed to fight our corner and saying that this is not a devolved matter is simply not good enough".
