Eleanor Burnham, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly member for North Wales, attended the recent launch in the Senedd of the multi-million pound heritage refurbishment by British Waterways of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.
The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal, among the world's most renowned and spectacular achievements in canal engineering, has been put forward by Culture Secretary James Purnell as the UK's latest nomination for World Heritage Site status.
The nomination, which is backed by Lib Dem led Wrexham Council, was delivered to UNESCO in January 2008 and will be assessed by UNESCO during 2008-9, with a final decision will be announced during the summer of 2009.
Ms Burnham said: "I am delighted that British Waterways is committed to this refurbishment of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and am confident it beauty will be recognised by UNESCO when they assess its suitability for World Heritage Status.
"This is a very exciting project that would deliver a tremendous boost for the local economy and tourism, as I know from personal experience when I took two of my cousins who were visiting from New Zealand to see the site last month!"
