Welsh Liberal Democrat Eleanor Burnham AM today called on the Assembly's First Minister, Rhodri Morgan, to ensure that sufficient funds are made available to support the children of asylum seekers.
Ms. Burnham said, "Local authorities carry the immediate responsibility for the welfare of these young children. Whilst applications are being assessed, parents are not allowed to work, therefore money is tight. It is essential that the proper resources are available in terms of health, education and language.
"There is general agreement that the exact number of asylum seekers in Wales is not known, and so it is doubly important that children do not slip through the safety net.
"Wrexham has been held up as a beacon in assisting asylum seekers and their families, and I am seeking assurances that appropriate funding from the Assembly ensures this type of care is replicated throughout Wales."
