We have all been shocked by the unprecedented economic events that have overtaken us in the past few weeks.
Local authorities in Wales have £78 million tied up in Icelandic banks. Inflation stands at 5.2%. Yet the Labour/Plaid Assembly Government's Draft Budget proposes an average increase of just 2.9% to our already cash-strapped councils.
Today in the Assembly Siambr I expressed my concerns to Andrew Davies, Minister for Finance and Public Services. I was challenging him as to how he expected councils to bear this massive financial burden without cuts or Council Tax increases.
Sadly, I received no reassurances.
Some councils have already switched off their streetlights to save money. This settlement risks leaving us all in the dark.
