BURNHAM WELCOMES REPORT

October 13, 2008 2:00 PM

Responding to the first report of the Older People's Commissioner for Wales - Coming of Age, Eleanor Burnham, Welsh Lib Dem equalities spokesperson, said:

"Whilst I welcome the Older People's Commissioner's first report, as it highlights many issues that face an ever growing population of people over sixty, I would like to have seen recommendations that can make a positive impact on the lives of those who are often vulnerable and ignored. Surely in 6 months, the Commissioner has made some assessments of the issues that need addressing.

"It would be churlish to criticise the work of the Commission but I have grave doubts about its ability to deliver on its pledges without the whole-hearted support of the Labour/Plaid Government.

"The report also draws attention to the fact that many of the issues facing older people in Wales are issues that Westminster have control over, leaving the Labour/Plaid Government ineffective in helping older people in Wales. Many in Wales would welcome the powers that would provide better lives for an ever growing number of people in this country."
