Welsh Liberal Democrat for North Wales Eleanor Burnham today called on the Welsh Assembly Government to speed up the release of European funds to those organizations who qualify.
Speaking during the Assembly's Plenary session, Ms. Burnham asked the Leader of the House, Carwyn Jones, to explain why many small and voluntary bodies are being put under threat of closure because of a lack of efficient and timely distribution of funding.
Ms. Burnham said, "It is totally unacceptable that small businesses and bodies who rely on European funding for their very existence are being treated this way. One company I know is looking at closure in just a few weeks because of this tardiness. That extremely worthwhile organization assists older people in the workplace.
"Ironically, this is being raised on the same day as we debate "Skills that Work for Wales" - a document which specifically talks about building skills in older people. Once again, we find complacency where we should expect commitment".
