Burnham slams Labour's poor record on crime.

April 16, 2008 12:00 AM

Eleanor Burnham, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for North Wales, slammed Labour's 'tough' stance on crime as spin before substance. Refusal to support the roll out of the 101 service and criticism of Welsh Liberal Democrat's investment in the effective Police Community Support Officers proves that Labour's record on crime is disappointing.

Ms Burnham said:

"Labour's record on crime is little short of criminal and they need to wake up to the realities that slapping ASBOs on young people, pulling the plug on essential 101 services in Cardiff and criticising the Police Community Support Officers in Wrexham is not a way of addressing anti social behaviour and making people feel safer in their communities.

"The Welsh Liberal Democrats are not just saying that we're tough on crime, we're proving that we are tough on crime.

"In Wrexham, the Welsh Liberal Democrats have been proving their effectiveness on crime by investing 56 Police Community Support Officers and a specialist anti-social behaviour team to work across the borough. This has seen an impressive 33% drop in crime rates making people feel safer.

"In Cardiff, the Welsh Liberal Democrat-led council has worked with the police to fund nearly 80 more PCSOs and re-instate the successful 101 service to free-up police time.

"Across Wales, Welsh Liberal Democrat-led councils have worked hard towards making people feel safer in their communities, working with the Police and Community Support Officers and other youth voluntary sectors to reduce anti-social behaviour."
