Eleanor Burnham, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for North Wales, today congratulated Wrexham County Council on their positive Estyn report on the County Council's education services. The month long inspection by Estyn reports that the County Council's education services are generally good with no important shortcomings, with elected members providing strong leadership and services for pupils with additional learning needs good at all levels.
Ms Burnham said:
"Estyn's report on the standard of education in the county is generally positive and I am pleased with the work that the Liberal Democrat lead Council is doing to provide education services for the 19,000 pupils in the area.
"The Estyn report praised the strong leadership of the elected members on their strategy to raise standards across schools in the county. The report also noted that the over the last two years the, since the Liberal Democrats took over the council, strategic planning at a corporate level has improved because of clearer understanding of priorities by officials and members.
"In 2005, the Liberal Democrat lead Wrexham Council inherited an education system which was second from bottom in education spending by Welsh local authorities.
"A 14% increase in spending, coupled with a determination not to pass on the Welsh Assembly Government's 1% efficiency cuts on schools and plans agreed with each secondary school for improvement targets over three years meant Wrexham was the most improved Welsh authority last year."
Ms Burnham also said:
"Having chaired the Assembly Committee looking into more powers for Wales on Additional Learning Needs, I am extremely pleased that the Local Education Authority provides good support for students with special educational needs and that schools across the County have good initiatives at promoting the inclusion of such pupils."
