Eleanor Burnham, North Wales Liberal Democrat Assembly Member, is urging the Health Minister, Edwina Hart and the commissioning agent Health Commission Wales (HCW) to include DBS as a condition to their list of approved treatments.
Ms Burnham said:
"For some time I have been campaigning on behalf of my constituents needing this vital treatment which so far has been turned down by HCW. It causes great distress for the sufferers who are angry and frustrated as the treatment is recommended by GPs and Consultants.
"The Parkinson's Society in Wales has also contacted me to promote the case as there are constituents all over Wales who need this treatment and I have pointed this out to the Minister.
"Since last May, many other constituents' treatment issues, rejected by HCW, have been brought to my attention. Understandably, patients are outraged when refused the best treatment for their condition. There are examples where such decisions have been overturned through public pressure. That's just wrong. I believe in a healthcare service for all.
"I'm aware of the ongoing HCW review and sincerely trust that improvements will be available for my long suffering constituents."
