One step closer to protecting children of Wales

November 11, 2007 12:00 AM

Eleanor Burnham, Welsh Liberal Democrat spokesperson for children and young people, today welcomed the statement by Jane Hutt, Minister for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills on the future provision of Children & Young People's Advocacy.

Ms Burnham said:

"The statement today by the Minister shows that she committed to provide an effective system of advocacy services for children and young people in Wales, I support her commitment.

"In order for this service to be an effective one, we need to have an all-Wales commissioning body providing advocacy services for children and young people. It is also vital that the service be robustly independent and that means it cannot be provided by the local service providers themselves.

"Advocacy is important to the protection and wellbeing of children and it is also a vital way of developing children's participation and delivering their rights.

"I am also pleased that the Minister is considering to include children and young people in an Independent Board to report back annually to the Assembly Government and the Children and Young People's Scrutiny Committee on which I sit."
