Eleanor Burnham, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for North Wales, welcomed additional resources to the hospice sector but attacked Health Minister, Edwina Hart on her failing to tackle the core funding crisis in Wales' hospices. Ms Burnham condemned the lack of ongoing core support for hospices, which receive drastically less government funding than similar institutions across the border in England and Scotland.
Ms Burnham said:
"As a former fundraiser for a hospice in my North Wales region and having chaired the North Wales Regional Committee where we discussed hospices, I understand the perilous position of the voluntary hospice care and support that so many people rely on.
"This funding issue is basically a question of efficiency. Hospices services often bridge the yawning gap left by an overstretched NHS, by ensuring the provision of these services is in the right places we will also help to ease the pressure on our hospitals.
"Hospices provide an excellent standard of care, comfort and dignity to those who need it most, and they manage this largely thanks to the contributions and donations of the public.
"I understand the government must make tough decisions about funding for the NHS however when we see Scottish hospices receiving 40% from their government and English hospices receiving 32% - why do hospices in Wales only receive 12% funding from the government?
"I do not want to see Wales falling further behind Scotland and England in terms of core funding for hospices"
