Eleanor Burnham, Welsh Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Heritage, today welcomed the Minister's statement on the financial situation of the WMC but warned that many more culture projects find themselves in dire financial difficulties.
Ms Burnham said:
"The future of Welsh Culture is looking bleak given the recent disclosure of the WMC debt and the poor financial settlement given to Wales. Money allocated to various culture projects will be put under a lot of strain.
"The Minister himself said that funding for the arts in Wales was not enough and pleaded with the Finance Minister to consider increased funding.
"Lottery funding for the arts and sports in Wales has fallen dramatically in recent years. There are fears that as much as £24 million could be slashed from the Lottery Fund given to Wales to host the 2012 Olympics in London.
"We need to make sure that the future of Welsh Culture is in safe hands and my fear is that the cultural life of Wales will be under siege in the months to come."
