Eleanor Burnham, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for North Wales, slammed Economy and Transport Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones for his lack of clarity and commitment to transport issues in North Wales.
Responding to the Minister's statement, Ms Burnham said:
"I am very disappointed with the Minister's statement. The people of North Wales are being let down yet again by the actions of the Welsh Assembly Government. There was a lack of clarity and direction for issues that deeply affect North Wales from the Assembly Member who represents Anglesey.
"I am disappointed that the Minister failed to mention the electrification of the Wrexham/Bidston railway link. People have been doing very detailed work on this, and it is important that north-east Wales has links, not only with Cardiff, but also with Liverpool. Some excellent work has been done on that line to date, but I understand that the timescale for completing the work has slipped again and is delayed by two years until the middle of the next decade. This is not good enough"
Ms Burnham added:
"It is high time that we realised the negative impact that widening of the A494 will have in communities near to the road. Noise pollution and carbon emissions will inevitably increase with the proposed 'American style superhighway'. The environmentally and community friendly way of avoiding this is to move freight from the roads to rail. There was a passing reference to this in the Minister's statement - but my constituents in North Wales need more certainty.
"These transport links are essential to the future economic prosperity of North Wales and people need to know what the Government's plans entail."
