Eleanor Burnham, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for North Wales, today challenged the Plaid-Labour Coalition Government to do more to promote sustainable energy for homes, businesses and communities across North Wales.
Ms Burnham was speaking in the Welsh Liberal Democrat debate on energy generation in the Siambr, calling for an official timetable for the devolution of planning controls over power facilities generating over 50 MW and building control regulations. This would mean people across all parts of Wales could generate their own cost-effective energy. Ms Burnham and her party also took the opportunity to restate their opposition to nuclear power in Wales.
Ms Burnham said: "Micro-generation can provide cost-effective, reliable power for homes, businesses and whole communities, not just across North Wales, but indeed for the whole country.
"A micro-CHP unit will deliver the same comfort levels as a modern boiler, whilst reducing the emissions of a typical house by 1.5 tonnes, around 25%, of carbon dioxide per year.
"Micro-wind turbines and solar panels can cut energy bills by up to £100 per year or can be integrated in conjunction with other types of micro-generators to offer genuine zero carbon residences. If we have the power to introduce requirements for new building regulations to be 'green' and include these types of systems, we will be creating a cleaner, greener Wales.
"And today we have seen Plaid u-turn on nuclear power, failing to back our motion "rejecting any new nuclear power stations for Wales.
"The Welsh Liberal Democrats are now the only party to say no to new nuclear power stations for Wales."
