As the National Eisteddfod launches, a Welsh Lib Dem AM has issued a stark warning on language rights. Welsh Language Champion Eleanor Burnham said:
"Wales needs a new Language Act, with clear rights to services from public bodies. I don't believe the current Act does enough to promote the use of Welsh in people's daily lives, and their dealings with the Government.
"And I don't believe Labour have taken this seriously in the past. The recent snipings from Labour MPs over train announcements in Welsh demonstrate this."
"The Eisteddfod is a wonderful celebration of our unique culture. And the Welsh Language should be promoted as an asset, not a hindrance to rail passengers.
"A new Act must protect our rights to choose to use Welsh or English, as a foundation for a truly bilingual society.
"This is the first real test of the coalition. Many people here today have campaigned hard for it. I hope the Government can meet their expectations."
