Eleanor Burnham AM today highlighted to the worrying lack of coronary care services in North Wales, revealing both the severe shortage of Coronary Care Units at Glan Clwyd hospital where there are just 8 beds for a population of at least 202,892.
It has been two years since the successful introduction of rehabilitation programmes for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in Neath Port Talbot, without any sign of introducing such programs in other areas including North Wales.
Ms Burnham said: "I have heard distressing stories about the lack of intensive care beds in our North Wales hospitals, including the fact that Glan Clwyd hospital and Llandudno hospital have only 11 specialist coronary care beds between them.
"I would urge the Health Minister to face the challenges of heart disease, as Wales' biggest killer, head on by getting these coronary rehabilitation programmes rolled out across Wales.
"We know that the key to freeing up specialist beds in our hospitals is better care and support in communities. We need accessible, specialist health care available outside of hospitals to reduce the number of admissions that are often unnecessary and taking up a short supply of beds.
