Dear Sir,
Mark Jones is sadly clearly misguided if he really believes that the Welsh Liberal Democrats have 'dropped' the only voting system that can make every Welsh vote count equally.
On the contrary, the Welsh Liberal Democrats have never given up on fair votes for local government. Our pre-manifesto launched last week, containing of 70 policies, clearly shows that we aim to deliver a fairer Wales in the next Assembly. Evidently, his accusation that we have 'dumped' policy is ridiculous, particularly when it is Plaid that make promises that fail to address the crumbling systems in need of rejuvenation. Their latest policy idea, a laptop for every schoolchild while our school buildings are crumbling, makes that absolutely clear.
We are evidently a party that are serious about making the change to PR, as we established the Sunderland Commission which recommended fair votes. We believe that everybody in Wales deserves fair representation.
It is clear that the present voting system fails to represent all of the voters who participate, so we will be continuing to discuss PR as part of our wider policy program for a fairer Wales.
Eleanor Burnham
Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for North Wales
