Eleanor Burnham AM has today tabled a statement of opinion pledging her support for an UNESCO nomination that could finally see the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct recognized as a World Heritage Site.
Ms Burnham, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for North Wales and Culture Spokesperson, has visited the site on its 200th anniversary last November and has highlighted the historical importance of the site, which created a navigable route between England and Wales when it was completed back in 1805.
Ms Burnham said: "This Aqueduct is one of the defining features of our North Wales landscape and I believe we should formally recognise the lasting skill and architectural achievement of those who built it.
"This decision by UNESCO to put the Aqueduct forward for a World Heritage Bid nomination is fantastic news for North Wales and something of which we can all be proud.
"Now the real work begins for everyone behind the bid, which is why I am asking all Assembly Members to put down their support for the bid on paper. By backing the efforts of those working on the nomination, we could finally see the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct take its place alongside Wales' five other World Heritage Sites."
