Dear Sir,
I must disagree with K. F. Miller's (Tuesday 5th Dec.), statement that the Welsh Liberal Democrats are 'behind the times' when it comes to campaigning for hospices. One event organised by a single AM does not mean others have not been busy.
I know that Eleanor Burnham, our North Wales AM, has been deeply involved in working with hospices for many years now.
Before joining the Assembly, Eleanor used to work as a fundraiser for the St Kentigern Hospice in Wrexham and her recent visit back there illustrates her personal commitment to campaigning on the funding issues that threaten the future of these invaluable organisations.
Furthermore, as chair of the North Wales Regional Committee only a few months ago, Eleanor spearheaded a campaign to address the funding problems faced by hospices throughout the region.
The event at the Assembly last week was roundly supported by many North Wales AMs. We must give credit where credit is due, and I recognise Mark Isherwood did an excellent job organising the most recent lobby, but we must not be fooled into believing that others have not busy either.
Eleanor has been lobbying the Labour government to recognise the funding needs of Welsh hospices for 13 years, since she started working for St Kentigern. Long may she continue to do so, until our hospices get the government support they truly deserve.
