North Wales' Public Police Poll Falls on Deaf Ears - Burnham

November 30, 2006 12:50 PM

Eleanor Burnham AM has slammed Labour MP's refusal to listen to the public in North Wales, following Ian Lucas' claim that a poll revealing 75% of people would be happy to pay more tax to boost police on the streets in the region. This comes in the wake of Chief Constable Richard Brunstrum's announcement that frontline jobs would go because of the resulting funding deficit.

Ms Burnham, who has been calling for the Assembly to secure the Home Office compensation owed to regional police forces across Wales since merger plans were scrapped, today expressed her anger over Labour's dismissal of public feeling.

Ms Burnham, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for North Wales said: "It is utterly mad that Ian Lucas can dismiss the votes of his constituents so easily, particularly when Chief Constable Brunstrum is telling us police jobs will be lost and still the government have got nowhere in getting our money back.

"Far from being 'propaganda', this new poll shows that people across North Wales are picking up the tab for the government's failure to get back Welsh police cash from the Home Office.

"Are we going to have to stump up every time the UK government makes a mistake intervening in Welsh affairs?

"People in North Wales and across the nation deserve to feel safe in their communities, which is why the Welsh Liberal Democrats are encouraging the introduction of even more Community Support Officers throughout the country.

"But it seems that Ian Lucas and his Labour colleagues are happy to sit by and ignore the calls of both the public and politicians, making no effort to win back Welsh compensation or acknowledge the need for more funding to keep our communities safe."

Notes:

Ms Burnham responded to the results of a survey by the North Wales Police Authority which stated:

• 61% of people would feel safer with more of a police presence in their communities

• 75% of people would be happy to pay an increase in council tax to fund the shortfall in police funding

• 46% would pay an increase in council tax to maintain services and bridge the gap in fighting serious crime.
