Letter to Evening Leader: Connah's Quay Sports Centre

October 27, 2006 11:35 AM

May I say how dismayed I am that yet another community sports centre is struggling to function under this Labour Government.

I read Mr Watson's letter about Connah's Quay Sports Centre with dismay. The poor maintenance of the building is just one case of many across Wales. It angers me when I think of how the Labour government has trumpeted its Free Swimming as such a success, while local sports facilities like this are left to crumble.

I have argued for greater investment in local coaching and sport facilities in my region and indeed across Wales, starting with an audit of all centres such as Connah's Quay in order to identify when crucial funds must be invested.

Mr Watson's letter underlines why this is so important. The cancellation of his son's football training due to the poor state of the facilities illustrates how little notice Labour really takes of community sport coaching. How can it expect people in Wales to take its 'healthy living' drive seriously when local leisure centres, pitches and fields are falling to pieces?

I hope that my actions, on behalf of people like Mr Watson, will convince the Welsh Assembly Government to get into gear and bring local facilities up to scratch.
