Sir,
I have been receiving many complaints from North Wales constituents regarding the problems surrounding transport between Cardiff and North Wales for the Euro 2008 qualifying match on the 11th October. Specifically, these address the fact that Arriva Trains Wales are unable to run a Wrexham-Cardiff service due to the late kick-off and track access limitations.
Having discussed the issue with Arriva, I have discovered that the problems with providing such a service stem from the pre-existing arrangements made by the Football Association Wales and Network Rail. A late kick-off time makes arranging transport links difficult for many operators, not just Arriva Trains Wales and this coupled with a lesser demand for football travel makes it increasingly hard for operators to accommodate those fans who do wish to travel.
I believe this lack of communication between FAW and transport operators across Wales is costing football fans the opportunity to attend important matches. I would therefore urge the FAW to carefully consult with all transport companies to ensure that the scheduling of matches such as Wales vs. Cyprus on the 11th allows as many Welsh fans as possible to see their national team play.
