Eleanor Burnham AM today debated the effectiveness of the Welsh Assembly Government's contribution to road safety in some of the most dangerous areas across North Wales.
Following recently reported accidents on a series of major roads across the region, Ms Burnham, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for North Wales, highlighted the fact that the numbers of casualties in North Wales are actually rising.
Ms Burnham said: "We have found that despite the hard work of our local police force and road safety organisations across Wales, North Wales sees the highest number of road traffic casualties in the country among all age groups.
"Particularly worrying is the high number of children that are injured on the roads every year. In Gwynedd this means 482 children under the age of 15 were injured as a result of road traffic accidents in just 1 year.
"I want to see that the Welsh Assembly Government take these figures seriously and push on with the work they have started. The introduction of 20mph zones, speed cameras on key roads and the use of automated signs to warn drivers of their speed are all excellent methods of saving lives. We need to ensure that North Wales does not fall beneath the Government's radar - especially in light of the high numbers of people still suffering injuries in North Wales."
