Sink or Swim: Local Sport Lacks Support

September 6, 2006 1:00 PM

As the Free Swimming Initiative ends this week, Eleanor Burnham AM is calling for more cash to fund sport and activity coaching in Wales.

The Initiative, designed to allow free swimming to under-16s during school holidays, has had little impact on the number of children learning to swim in Wales, while locally based sports and activities continue to suffer a shortage of coaches and resources.

Welsh Liberal Democrat Sport spokesperson Eleanor Burnham said: "The free swimming for under-16s has been little more than a government sponsored play scheme. It would be better to give these children free lessons, instead of having them splash about in a pool.

"The Assembly government is not doing enough to fund accessible sports coaching within communities. I want to see the encouragement of healthy sport and activity, not more badly planned gimmicks.

"Increasing health and fitness is best achieved through organised training for local children in and out of school. Now that the summer holidays have ended, providing sport lessons and coaching will be crucial in keeping children active."
