Eleanor Burnham AM is demanding an urgent meeting with the TV Licensing Authority after it emerged that changes in TV Licensing threaten to drive North Wales tourism providers out of business.
The change in the rules has left one caravan park owner threatening to remove TVs from their caravans as a result of a 1000% increase in fees. The Federation of Small Businesses has also criticized the move by the TV Licensing authority.
Eleanor Burnham, Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for North Wales, said: "I find the implementation of this change ridiculous. The tourist industry plays a crucial role in the North Wales and should be actively encouraged. Massive hikes in costs like these will only result in weakening the local economy.
"I am arrange a meeting with the Federation of Small Business and the TV Licensing Authority in order to get to the bottom of this matter. The new system, which came unannounced and unexplained to local business men and women, represents a real threat to a major employment sector across Wales."
Ms Burnham's comments come in response to the concerns of Mike Learmond of the Federation of Small Businesses, who criticised the TV Licensing authority's implementation of the charges. He said: "At a time when Wales is investing sizeable sums to attract visitors to the area, I find this heavy-handed and arrogant attitude towards such an important part of the local economy amazing."
