Dear Sir,
Yesterday's headline of 'Hospitals Facing the Axe', dramatised what is a serious debate about the future delivery of our healthcare services in North Wales. We face some tough choices in the coming years, what we need is sensible discussion, not dramatic headlines.
Any change must be in exchange for better services for those who need it most. Modernising and improving our NHS should not be about taking our community healthcare services apart. Community hospitals cannot easily be replaced once they are gone.
We need to rationalise secondary care in order to provide a better service where it is needed most. 40% of the population of North Wales will be over 65 in fifteen years time. The North Wales NHS is right to be thinking now about our future needs.
I look forward to seeing what the final report recommends and I urge your readers to make their views heard in April's consultation. There is a gap in opinion between the public and healthcare professionals and I hope that the consultation will help build a consensus. Ultimately though, forward planning is no substitute for proper funding.
Yours,
Eleanor Burnham AM
Assembly Member for North Wales
