Schools can build on popularity of cricket to encourage participation in sport

September 8, 2005 4:02 PM

The success of England and Wales' cricketers in the Ashes Tests could be a springboard for a greater range of sporting options in our schools.

Sports spokesperson Eleanor Burnham AM said: "Many pupils are turned off sport because they have no aptitude for football, rugby and netball. I hope the great transformation of the image of cricket will encourage schools to consider a wider choice of sports, including cricket.

"While we will all be enjoying the exciting cricket over the next five days, we shouldn't forget that the women's team has also beaten the Australians this year. Cricket, like football, is no longer a male preserve.

"We want to encourage active lifestyles among young people. Those who find a sport they enjoy are more likely to continue playing when they leave school. It is vital we give children a chance to find which games give them the greatest pleasure."
